Michigan extended several offers this past week to players in the 2020 class — one of them being wide receiver Johnquai Lewis.
Defensive backs coach Michael Zordich extended the offer to Lewis on Thursday. And although Lewis is mainly being recruited as a wide receiver, he told Maize n Brew Friday morning that Michigan is recruiting him as an athlete.
“After (Zordich) saw my film, they offered me as an athlete,” he said. “(I play) wide receiver and defensive back, so I (can play) on both sides of the ball.”
When asked which position group he thinks he’d fit in best with at Michigan, Lewis did not hesitate.
“Wide receiver,” he said, “because they run a spread offense. That’s the best offense I fit in because they throw the ball a lot.”
The 6-foot, 170-pounder from Hialeah, Florida doesn’t have a huge offer sheet as of now, but has seen an uptick in his recruitment in recent months. He received an offer from Scott Frost and Nebraska last month, and also holds offers from Auburn, North Carolina, Indiana, Pitt, Syracuse, UCF and Louisville, to name a few notables.
Lewis says he is currently being recruited hardest by Syracuse and Auburn. He unofficially visited Florida on Friday, as well.
He doesn’t know when he will get out to Ann Arbor, but he’s hoping to this summer.
“I don’t know yet,” he said on when he plans to visit. “I plan on visiting in the summer (and hope to) get to know more about Michigan and the coaches.”
Lewis said no programs stand out to him, but two things that will make a program eventually stand out are them “showing love and show how much they want me,” he said.
Lewis is not yet ranked by 247Sports, nor does he have a composite score. He is listed as a 3-star on Rivals.com, however.
