Georgia native and 3-star defensive back DJ Turner II had a landslide of offers come in for the 2019 season. Turner ended up committing to Michigan on June 25 as a 3-star commit. But in a recent interview with MLive’s Aaron McMann, Turner said he felt underrated as a 3-star prospect.
”I feel like I’m way underrated,” Turner said. “I feel like I’m way underrated -- but that’s all right. I’ll just show them at Michigan,” Turner said. “Michigan don’t think I’m underrated -- that’s all that matters.”
As a senior in high school Turner recorded 50 tackles, two interceptions and six pass deflections, according to MaxPreps. The team went 14-1 and won the Georgia state title.
Turner can play any position in the secondary, and has even done so in high school, but he prefers to stay in the corner. His move to safety in high school may be the reason for his slight dip in his ranking from #280 nationally to #440, moving him from a 4-star recruit to a 3-star. Even though he recorded 78 tackles (50 solo and 28 assisted), ranking him 2nd on the team.
When 247Sports ranked the most athletic recruits in the country at The Opening Finals. Turner was ranked 19th out of 150 participants. Scouts said he showed speed, explosiveness, instinct and aggressive coverage.
So what gives?
I believe Turner is right — he is underrated and should be a 4-star recruit.
Moving to safety shouldn’t have dropped his ranking, considering he was a key component to winning a state title for the first time in school history. His skills are based on instinct and athleticism, things that can’t really be taught. His versatility shouldn’t lower his ranking. In my opinion, his versatility and instincts makes him more valuable.
