It’s time for another Wednesday Michigan Recruiting Roundup, and just in time, as the coaches are out visiting prospects across the country and starting to build the 2020 class. Here’s what they’ve been up to in the past couple of days.
Michigan checks in on 2019 Alabama commit
As I mentioned in last week’s roundup, Michigan is pursuing 4-star running back and Alabama commit Keilan Robinson to add to the 2019 class.
According to The Michigan Insider’s Steve Lorenz, the coaches are traveling to St. John’s College High School in Washington D.C. to try to sway the running back in person ($).
Robinson still hasn’t scheduled an official visit to campus yet, but that may be on Michigan’s end as it tries to figure out how many additional players it can take in this class. If he’s a take, the Wolverines are in a good position for a flip.
Michigan has offered several players at St. John’s for the 2020 cycle, as six of the top seven players in Washington D.C. play for the Cadets. You can bet the coaches seeing Robinson will be checking in on those prospects too.
2020 4-star wide receiver plans on taking official to Ann Arbor
Landing the No. 8 player in the country in Daxton Hill was enough of a reward in itself, but his commitment is paying dividends in other ways.
Hill’s commitment has opened the door for Michigan to get in with his younger teammate, 4-star wide receiver Javian Hester. The 80th ranked player in the country for 2020 talked with TMI’s Brice Marich about his relationship with the coaches and Hill ($).
“I’m taking to coach Roundtree right now, but I’ve talked to coach Moore the most. My relationship is good (with coach Moore),” he said. “It’ll definitely get better as we continue to talk more and that goes for coach Roundtree too.”
New offensive coordinator and former wide receivers coach Josh Gattis can certainly be counted on to help out in this recruitment as well.
Hester talked about the benefit of having Hill already on campus if he were to choose the Wolverines. “I’m kind of close with him, but yeah just already having someone you know going there can help especially when you’re on the same high school team.”
The 6-foot-3 receiver said he doesn’t know for sure when he’ll be visiting Michigan, but when he does, it’ll be for an official. That’s a big distinction to make, and signifies he has high interest in the school. Hester also mentioned he’s planning to visit Arkansas and Notre Dame in the spring.
Ed Warinner going hard after 4-star OT
One of the offensive lineman Michigan has the best chance with in the 2020 cycle is Pennsylvania 4-star Michael Carmody. In an interview with TMI’s Steve Lorenz, he conveyed the staff was pursuing him heavily ($).
”I’d say right now, I am probably hearing from Michigan three or four times a week,” Carmody said. “I am really hearing from them a lot. They are supposed to be at my school sometime this week as well.”
Carmody has visited Ann Arbor twice already and witnessed Warinner coaching in action. This is definitely a race where the five crystal balls to Penn State obscure how good Michigan’s chances are with the 4-star. This will be a tight battle, especially if the staff keeps showing him so much love
Coaches visit 2020 4-star TE committed to Miami
It didn’t take long for my 2020 position previews to be outdated. Michigan coaches traveled to Florida yesterday to see Dominic Mammarelli, the No. 4 tight end in the country for 2020, per TMI’s Steve Lorenz ($).
Mammarelli plays for Naples, which is the same school current Wolverine defensive back Sammy Faustin attended. That connection may help a bit in flipping the 4-star, who is currently committed to Miami.
That commitment doesn’t seem very firm, however. Miami’s tight ends coach, Todd Hartley, was just lured away to Georgia and is likely a major factor for Mammarelli’s waffling. Georgia will also be a major contender for his services.
Mammarelli has been committed to the Hurricanes since last March, when he was a sophomore. Miami for some reason always gets a bunch of commitments from underclassmen, only for them to de-commit once their recruitment cycle starts in earnest. If Mammarelli is part of this phenomenon, it won’t be a surprise.
That wraps up this edition of the recruiting roundup, be sure to check back soon for more news and updates!
