2021 QB J.J. McCarthy details Michigan visit: “Coach Gattis’ offense will be insane”

We caught up with Michigan’s top QB target in the 2021 class

2021 quarterback J.J. McCarthy had an unofficial visit to Michigan over the weekend, where he was told that he’s their top QB target in his class, something McCarthy said was “awesome to hear”.

Maize n Brew caught up with the 6-2 180 pound QB out of La Grange Park, Illinois (Nazareth Academy), who detailed his visit in full.

“It’s not every day you get to spend time with a legendary Michigan QB, coach, and NFL QB,” McCarthy said. “We went to a bowling alley called Revel and Roll and there were other recruits there, but the entire coaching staff seemed like they were there. Coach Harbaugh and his wife showed up about thirty minutes after we arrived. They sat down with my mom and dad while I was bowling and then I was able to have great conversations in a relaxed setting. It was perfect.”

McCarthy also was able to go to a meeting, which gave him a better understanding of how the new Michigan scheme is looking.

“Watched film with Coach McDaniels and sat in the QB meeting. The new scheme fits Shea perfectly and watching all the RPO concepts is exactly what I love! Coach Gattis’ offense will be insane,” McCarthy said.

Insane how?

“Putting athletes in space to make plays while relying on your QB to make on field decisions by using a RPO concept.”

Sitting in the QB meeting, McCarthy was next to some familiar faces, and was able to see how Harbaugh and Ben McDaniels coach the QB’s. “That room is loaded with dudes. Guys that I followed through the Elite 11 shows were all in there,” McCarthy said. “Coach McDaniels is such a good communicator. Coach Harbaugh was heavily involved in the meeting also.”

When asked if he left his Michigan visit more inclined to commit to the Wolverines McCarthy has some specific criteria: “I can tell you this, I will be committing to a school that stresses academics, football tradition and an intensity to bring out the best every practice. I want to win National titles.”

And does Michigan meet that criteria? “100%. They check all the boxes.”

When asked what type of player he is, McCarthy noted he models his game off of Shea Patterson’s. “I am a pro style QB with dual threat capabilities. I have watched film on Shea the past three years. He is a player I model my game off of.”

247 Sports has two crystal ball predictions in for McCarthy, one is Northwestern, the other is Ohio State, but McCarthy said “Michigan has all the qualities that I want. Just like Northwestern and Ohio State” and that “it’s early right now” in the recruiting process.

McCarthy plans to release a list of the top schools he’s considering sometime this summer.
