Wednesday Michigan Recruiting Roundup: Who is Michigan’s top recruiting target now?

After Braiden McGregor committed last week, who replaces him at the top of the coaches’ board?

Braiden McGregor’s game-changing commitment last Friday set off a three-day Memorial Day weekend that didn’t see too much going on with recruiting, as most people were on vacation.

Given that and a recent article by The Michigan Insider’s Brice Marich about Andre Seldon’s recruiting efforts now that McGregor is on board ($), I figured it would be a good time to see who the staff’s new top overall target could be.

Let’s look at a few candidates who could be getting the full-court press soon.

I.C. Norcum (VA) 4-star DE Antwaun Powell

Pairing McGregor with Antwaun Powell, the No. 130 player in the country and sixth at his position would give the staff incredible bookends along the defensive line. And it looks like Michigan is in a good spot to accomplish the feat, as three of the four crystal ball picks are for the Wolverines right now.

Powell is also considering in-state Virginia Tech, who has the other prediction, Oklahoma and Maryland. With his official visit at Michigan on June 21 being the last among that quartet, I think he’s a contender to be on commit watch when the date rolls along. But given McGregor is already in the fold, it slightly lessens Powell’s impact if he were to commit. Let’s move on.

Bergen Catholic (NJ) 4-star S Jordan Morant

Another target Michigan has been in a very good spot with is New Jersey safety Jordan Morant. After Anthony Campanile and Josh Gattis were hired, Michigan became the team to beat and the large crystal ball lead held by Penn State has been overtaken.

What’s holding me back here is Morant declared he wouldn’t be announcing until the All-American bowl in January. Considering the fact Michigan is in with a plethora of top safety targets, Morant could find himself without a spot if he waits too long. Of course, he could change his plans or silently commit early, but like Powell he’s not quite as essential.

Lincoln-Way East (IL) 4-star WR A.J. Henning

In the article about Seldon mentioned above, he states, “My top priority right now is A.J. Henning.” That’s what I think the staff feels as well.

Henning recently visited the same weekend J.J. McCarthy and McGregor committed, which obviously was filled with good vibes. Following that trip, Michigan received two crystal ball predictions in their favor from Steve Wiltfong and Allen Trieu, two very reputable sources.

Henning will be officially visiting on June 21 like the other two players listed before him, and he’s also on commit watch. Grabbing the electric Henning would be the perfect complement for the #speedinspace offense and would give Michigan its first top-100 receiver since the 2017 class if the rankings close. Not to mention, securing the top player in the state of Illinois for three straight cycles and nabbing another highly coveted player from Notre Dame would be nice.

Who do you think the staff’s top priority should be now that McGregor has committed? Let us know in the comments below! We’ll be back with more recruiting updates soon, so stay with Maize n Brew for your latest news.
