NCAA Football: Michigan at Minnesota Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

On this week’s edition of Future Brew, we discuss how 2021 four-star cornerback Omarion Cooper is not signing his letter of intent in December. Instead, the Florida State commit will drag his recruitment on for another two months to the traditional signing period.

Von: Another kid who could end up getting some early playing time if he were to commit to Michigan is Florida State commit Omarion Cooper, and we’ve pretty much talked about him on every podcast here for the last three months. But he told Andrew Ivins at 247Sports that he also is not going to be signing early. He’s gonna be signing in February during the traditional signing period. So Jon, another opportunity here for Michigan to make another step in this recruitment, potentially get a flip, we’ll see what happens. He would pair up nicely with Ja’Den McBurrows. The door is definitely left open here for Michigan to make a move.

Jon: From Florida State’s perspective, Cooper signing in February is not a good sign for them, but they could also say that Michigan isn’t looking that great this season. He’s also considering Texas and South Carolina, who just fired their head coach, so you think that his other options aren’t that appealing right now. But I think Michigan has been building those relationships really well, and I think Michigan is doing a really strong job there. I don’t think Florida State is building that great of a culture down there, and I think Michigan can help just by showing him some love and making him feel more at home.

Von: Stephen, we talked about on the podcast not long ago that you would prefer Michigan to get a couple more defensive tackles at this point in this class. I’m curious if that opinion of yours has changed with Rayshaun Benny being committed elsewhere. It doesn’t really look like the other targets, potentially, are all that impressive. I’ve been saying all along take Cooper and take Ceyair Wright for sure, and if you only get George Rooks or another defensive tackle, so be it.

Stephen: I think the thing is if it wasn’t a cornerback, then I’d be like, well, I feel like defensive tackle you might need to take a flyer if it was another linebacker instead of another cornerback. Cornerback is arguably the second-most position of need at this point. You don’t turn down a commitment from someone of Cooper’s caliber just because of the defensive tackle situation. I still would like Michigan to take two defensive tackles in this class, but I think you still push as hard as you can for Cooper. I don’t foresee the defensive tackle position being solved in this class. I think you have to make a harder push in 2022 at this point.
