On this week’s Future Brew, we discussed how the de-commitment of 2021 defensive tackle Victory Vaka from Texas A&M, and his ensuing scholarship offer from Penn State, may help Michigan in its pursuit of 2021 four-star defensive tackle George Rooks.
Von: Shaun Nua had been going after Vaka for quite some time before that commitment. Things kinda cooled before then, but the possibility of them pursuing him again is always there. He received an offer from Penn State, and he made that very known on social media. Jon, do you think Michigan goes after him in the cycle or focus in on George Rooks?
Jon: It doesn’t seem very likely they’re gonna go after Vaka. I can kinda see why. His recruitment is pretty drama-filled. He kept pushing back his commitment date, and then didn’t stick with his A&M commitment. He hasn’t really developed well in his senior season, so I don’t think he’s quite the prospect they thought he was a few months ago. So I don’t think it will end up being notable for Michigan, even though they need defensive tackles. I don’t think he’d fit in Michigan’s system, which may not be the defensive system for long, but you gotta keep recruiting as if Don Brown is still gonna be leading the defense.
Von: Stephen, I think it’s significant that he got this Penn State offer, given George Rooks — this really seems to be a Michigan and Penn State battle. In my opinion, it goes a little way in showing that Penn State is probably not looking too good with George Rooks, or they don’t think they’re doing well. Could be good news later down the road for Michigan.
Stephen: I think it could. This late in the cycle, Penn State pushing for Vaka, it can’t mean bad things for Michigan. It means they’d either take both, or they are less optimistic about their chances of getting Rooks in the fold. I think with Michigan going after Rooks, and they generally haven’t gone after guys that need to trim down a bit, I don’t expect Michigan to get involved for Vaka.
