Thursday Recruiting Roundup: Harbaugh ‘offers’ second-grader recovering from leukemia

Everything about this is awesome.

Big Ten Football Media Days

Hey everyone, and welcome to another Michigan Recruiting Roundup!

I hope all you cool cats and kittens continue to bunker down in the safety of your homes. I don’t plan on leaving my house for anything other than groceries and exercise for the foreseeable future. It is an interesting time, but let’s try and stay optimistic, folks.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Now let’s get to the crootin’ news.

Harbaugh, Moore FaceTime top 2021 TE target

Head coach Jim Harbaugh and tight ends coach Sherrone Moore FaceTimed with top 2021 tight end target Thomas Fidone earlier this week. And in a really cool gesture, Harbaugh “offered” Fidone’s second-grade cousin, Sebastiano, who is recovering from leukemia.

Sebastiano received his first college offer today. We were able to join cousin Thomas Fidone on a video chat with...

“Yanno and Thomas got to do a little virtual workout together and it was an awesome perk of Thomas being heavily recruited, we are so thankful for Thomas and the coaches for setting it up today,” the Facebook post read in part.

First off, this is just awesome. Harbaugh definitely didn’t have to go out of his way to do all that for the kid, but the fact he did it goes to show he is a true class act.

As far as Fidone goes, we are going to start seeing more communication made between Harbaugh/Moore and the 6-foot-4.5, 218-pounder from Council Bluffs, Iowa. Since four-star tight end Brock Bowers left Michigan off his top list, Harbaugh and Moore can now hone in on Fidone, who is the No. 2 tight end in the class on 247Sports’ composite.

Fidone will be a tough pull, being a kid from Iowa who grew up a Nebraska fan, but he did include Michigan in his top six list last month alongside the Cornhuskers and Hawkeyes, as well as Notre Dame, Penn State and LSU.

U-M going hard after 2021 three-star DB

As first reported by The Michigan Insider’s Steve Lorenz ($) and later confirmed by Maize n Brew, the Wolverines continue their hot pursuit of 2021 three-star defensive back Ryan Barnes.

“Yes I hear from (Michigan) a lot,” Barnes told Maize n Brew. “(I talk with safeties) coach (Bob) Shoop every day and the other coaches every other day. I spoke to coach Harbaugh a couple of weeks ago.

“(Coach Shoop is) cool. We talk about being a student athlete at Michigan. He’s done a great job connecting me to the university and to the football program.”

Barnes was supposed to visit Michigan for the first time yesterday, but obviously the coronavirus changed things. He still hopes to commit somewhere before his senior season, but he also wants to make some visits before his commitment, too. With other big-time programs like Clemson, Notre Dame, Penn State and Tennessee on his tail, this will be a recruitment that could be a long ways away from ending.

2021 three-star DE updates recruitment amid pandemic

TJ Guy, a 2021 three-star defensive end from Mansfield, Massachusetts — or as I like to call it “Don Brown territory” — is one of Brown’s top targets at defensive end in this class. After receiving an offer from Michigan on Jan. 30, Guy backed off his verbal commitment to Boston College on Feb. 12.

Now with the recruiting dead period in effect, Guy was forced to change up his plans this spring, just like every other recruit. But the Wolverines remain a real threat to schools like Boston College.

“(Brown) tells me he wants me pretty bad,” Guy told 247Sports’ Brian Dohn ($). “I met almost all the coaches I’ve been dealing with and I talk to coach Harbaugh quite a bit. They just really want me and I think I can flourish in the way they play defense.”

Guy has not had the opportunity to see Ann Arbor in person, but he did take a virtual tour of the campus, and called the facilities “crazy.”

Along with Michigan and Boston College as schools at the forefront are Virginia and Nebraska, according to Dohn. Nebraska just offered him last Friday, and Virginia came in with an offer on Tuesday.

Michigan has done a solid job in this recruitment. If Brown and company continue to push here, I think they have a very good shot at landing him.

That’s all for now! We will have another roundup for you next Tuesday! Enjoy the rest of your week and stay safe, people.
