2021 four-star DE Quintin Somerville commits to Michigan

Michigan’s defensive class is looking real good.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 07 Army at Michigan

Michigan just landed its top target at the defensive end position, as 2021 four-star Quintin Somerville just committed to the Wolverines.

The Scottsdale, Arizona native is the No. 150 overall player in his class, per 247Sports’ composite. He chose Michigan over Florida State, Washington and Vanderbilt. He also had offers from Georgia, Auburn, Ohio State, Stanford, Michigan State and more.

Michigan defensive line coach Shaun Nua has been recruiting Somerville for more than two years, dating back to his days at Arizona State. This relationship played a huge role and may have ultimately led Somerville to choosing Michigan over the other programs.

Somerville is a pure pass-rushing threat along the edge. He is quick to get to the quarterback and can do so in a number of ways. He will need to work on his run defense, but Michigan fans have a lot to be excited about with this commitment.

Here is 247Sports’ Blair Angulo’s evaluation of Somerville:

“Stocky build with broad shoulders and decent length. Smart pass-rusher with array of counter moves. Technically sound and maintains low pad level. Manages to get underneath blocks and uses strong lower half to push forward. Mobile and spry in pass-rush situations. Disengages from blocks and shows flexibility to bend in pursuit. Finishes plays in the backfield. Stays gap conscious in run support. Could improve overall athleticism and quickness off the edge. Potential to be a multi-year Power Five starter and future NFL Draft selection.”

The Wolverines own the No. 7 overall class in 2021. Somerville joins four-star Kechaun Bennett, three-star TJ Guy and three-star Dominick Giudice as defensive linemen in Michigan’s 2021 class. Michigan’s final two big targets along the defensive line in this class are four-stars Rayshaun Benny and George Rooks.
