2021 four-star WR Xavier Worthy announces commitment date

Good news could be on the way soon.

NCAA Football: Michigan at Illinois Michael Allio-USA TODAY Sports

Arguably Michigan’s top target at the wide receiver position in the 2021 cycle is set to make his commitment next week.

Four-star Xavier Worthy announced on Twitter he is going to make his college decision on Instagram on Friday, July 10 at 4 p.m. EST.

The 6-foot-1, 160-pound speedster from Fresno, California narrowed his list down to six schools last month — Michigan, Oregon, Alabama, LSU, Georgia and Auburn. Oregon initially had full control of the crystal ball predictions on 247Sports, but the Wolverines took the lead Thursday night after a slew of predictions came in for them.

Worthy originally had a commitment date of June 27, but decided to back off that date and look into things a bit further. We said back then this was good news for Michigan, and it looks like that was exactly the case.

Worthy is a bit different of a receiver compared to the other two guys in Michigan’s class — four-star Cristian Dixon and three-star Markus Allen. He is able to stretch the field with his speed, as the other guys are more long-striders who get open, more often than not, with their crisp route running. Those traits, along with a really good junior season, landed him an invite to the All-American Bowl, along with Michigan commits J.J. McCarthy, Quintin Somerville and Tommy Doman.

Here is 247Sports’ Brandon Huffman’s evaluation of Worthy:

Explosive speedster with elite speed (10.55 PR in 100m as sophomore), dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands. Crisp route runner, with ability to quickly gain separation and stretch the field. Natural pass-catcher who can get deep consistently while also taking shorter passes. Good body control and ability to adjust to throws. Also adept punt and kick returner. Slender frame will need to add weight and strength. Projects as immediate impact Power 5 player and second or third day NFL draft pick.

Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis has led the way in this recruitment, much like for most of Michigan’s top offensive targets in this class — Dixon and Allen, four-star running back Donovan Edwards and four-star wide receiver Jayden Thomas, among others.

All signs point toward good news for Michigan. Stay tuned to Maize n Brew, as always, for more recruiting news, and keep your fingers crossed.

Worthy is the No. 175 overall prospect in the 2021 class, per the composite.
