Michigan’s chances with George Rooks, Jayden Thomas as commitments near

The Wolverines have been recruiting these two guys for a while now, but who do they fare better with?

On this week’s Future Brew, Von, Jon and Stephen discuss Michigan’s chances with a couple targets who are making their commitment decisions in the very near future — four-star defensive lineman George Rooks and four-star wide receiver Jayden Thomas.

Von: Jayden Thomas is gonna be dropping his commitment later on this week on Friday. Both crystal ball predictions in for Notre Dame right now, but Michigan still has been recruiting him since Markus Allen de-committed from the class. Another guy in the 2021 class who is looking to wrap up his recruitment is George Rooks. I believe it was Brian Dohn on 247Sports who had a story on him wanting to commit before his senior season began, and that is on Friday, so we could very well see two players commit that Michigan has been going after. So Stephen, who do you think is more likely bound for Ann Arbor?

Stephen: In recent interviews with both Rooks and Thomas, you can kind of read between the lines there. For Rooks, he is quoted saying it’s really where he feels most comfortable right now, which Michigan is kind of the consistent team that’s brought up. The most comfortable for him as gotta be Michigan. They’ve had the longest relationship being the first team to offer him back in June 2018, so Michigan has been the common theme here. Penn State, I could see because he’s had the chance to go out to Penn State, where both Pitt and BC, the other finalists, he hasn’t to my knowledge. Even though it’s been a quiet recruitment, I think he’s more likely than Jayden Thomas.

Von: Jon, would you rather stick with the defensive tackle there, get another guy in the middle, or would you want to continue that speed in space that Josh Gattis is looking for?

Jon: I think it’s no question I’d rather take Rooks. Michigan’s already got a good trio of receivers in the class. It’s not as big of a need for the roster right now, but defensive tackle is probably the most glaring position of need for Michigan right now, so getting a good solid four-star guy in Rooks would be a huge boon to the class and kind of give some recruiting followers some sense of relief, especially if they add Rayshaun Benny later on down the line.
