Thursday Recruiting Roundup: Coaches continue to connect with targets

It has been a busy week for the Wolverines.

On Tuesday’s Recruiting Roundup, my good friend Jon Simmons brought you the news of Michigan assistant coaches connecting with new and old targets in the 2022 class. That is also what I am bringing you on today’s Recruiting Roundup, but there is also an update on the latest 2021 offer, so let’s get to it.

Moore slated to speak with numerous OL targets

On Tuesday, Maize n Brew reported co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Sherrone Moore was slated to speak with 2022 three-star offensive line commit Connor Jones for the first time. That conversation did indeed happen, as we reported once again on Wednesday.

But according to The Michigan Insider’s Brice Marich ($), Moore is set to contact a few other offensive line targets in the 2022 class this week.

Among those players are four-star guard Carson Hinzman, four-star tackle Kiyaunta Goodwin, four-star tackle Lucas Heyer and three-star tackle George Fitzpatrick.

Moore already spoke with Hinzman earlier this week, Marich reported, so it appears he will be a top target moving forward for the Wolverines. He is on the fringe of being a top 100 player, so it makes sense as to why they’d go after him hard.

Heyer has been discussed a little bit, but Goodwin and Fitzpatrick are new to me. Goodwin has a couple crystal balls for Ohio State (shocker) and Fitzpatrick is a rising player from Colorado whose offer sheet includes Auburn, Florida State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State, USC, Texas and more.

These are all quality players, so hopefully Moore is able to make some movement in these recruitments and get U-M in on some more high quality offensive linemen.

Update on recently-offered 2021 DL

Last week, the new Michigan defensive coaching staff sent an offer to 2021 three-star defensive lineman Ikechukwu Iwunnah, who is currently committed to Colorado.

The 6-foot-4, 275-pounder is from Texas, a state which has been hit hard by the new staff, particularly co-defensive coordinator/cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist.

TMI’s Steve Lorenz ($) gave an update on this recruitment, stating a source on Iwunnah’s side of the recruitment said Michigan has a “great shot” to flip him away from Colorado. Lorenz also said there is optimism on Michigan’s side of things, citing the fact he’s the only 2021 prospect they have offered, as well as the elite blend of academics and athletics.

We are less than a week away from the final signing period for the 2021 class, so things are going to be moving quickly here in this recruitment. This would be a good get this late in the cycle for the new staff, considering they had little-to-no time to properly recruit him. We will see what happens in this one very soon, so stay tuned for more.

U-M DC connects with top in-state target

Defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald recently spoke with 2022 in-state four-star linebacker Joshua Burnham for the first time, this father told TMI’s Marich ($).

“I know Josh has been in contact with the new co-DC (Mike Macdonald), but his mother and I have not as of yet,” Mr. Burnham said. “I’m not sure if any other communications has been coming in from other defensive coaching positions.”

Joshua’s father also mentioned the family’s desire to go out on visits, if the NCAA recruiting dead period is lifted after April 15. Michigan is among the schools set to receive a visit from the Burnham’s, along with Notre Dame and “a few others.”

This recruitment still seems to be Michigan’s to lose. The family is a big U-M family, but they want to do their due diligence and get out to some other schools. As long as Michigan continues to make him a priority, he should wind up in Ann Arbor.

Burnham, who hails from Traverse City, is the No. 2 player in the state of Michigan, No. 9 outside linebacker and No. 114 overall player in the 2022 class on 247Sports’ composite. Other significant offers include Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan State and Wisconsin.

That’s all for this week! Come back next Tuesday for another Recruiting Roundup!
