Michigan gets high upside prospect in 2023 four-star LB Raylen Wilson early in the cycle

Among the topics on this week’s Future Brew podcast revolved around Michigan’s latest commitment to the 2023 class — four-star linebacker Raylen Wilson.

The top 100 overall prospect is now the top-ranked player in Michigan’s junior class after committing on Wednesday. He projects as someone who can play right away and make an impact his freshman season. Von Lozon and Jon Simmons discuss his commitment and how important it is to get him this early in the cycle.

Von: The 2023 class has really been gaining momentum ever since Michigan beat Ohio State. They picked up a commitment from Adam Samaha, I believe that was just before The Game. He is a kicker from Ann Arbor. Joel Starlings is No. 215 overall, a four-star defensive lineman at 6-5, 310, he committed to Michigan the day after they beat Ohio State. And then Semaj Morgan, the in-state three-star wide receiver, plays at West Bloomfield, he committed to U-M last Wednesday. Michigan got a bit more good news from Raylen Wilson, a four-star linebacker, listed at 6-2, 213, from Tallahassee, Florida. No. 74 on the composite, No. 14 in the state of Florida. The other finalist for him was the team Michigan is going to be taking on in the CFP semifinals, Georgia. He had a ton of other offers, Jon, Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Notre Dame, he could’ve gone anywhere. Really a centerpiece addition to Michigan’s 2023 class.

Jon: Yeah, Wilson is kind of interesting. For an out of region player, he seems really set on Michigan. He visited for the Northwestern game this season and apparently loved it. I think he was really impressed by Michigan’s end of the season, but even before the win over Ohio State he was really positive about Michigan and I think it’s great to bank in these top 100 guys this early in the cycle. Linebacker is going to be big after taking a lot of more high upside project guys in the 2022 class, getting a stud like Wilson who can see the field a little earlier, so 2023 is off to a good start.
