Michigan has had some good fortune on the recruiting trail of late, but no program bats a thousand, and they lost a key member of their 2022 class on Thursday night. Four-star 2022 DT Alex VanSumeren announced he de-committed from Michigan.
Although I will always be grateful for the opportunity, I am no longer committed to the University of Michigan. My recruitment is open. #thegrindneverstops @AllenTrieu @JoshHelmholdt @TomVH

“Although I will always be grateful for the opportunity, I am no longer committed to the University of Michigan,” VanSumeren said on Twitter. “My recruitment is open.”
The younger brother of Michigan linebacker Ben VanSumeren, Alex is the No. 16 ranked DT in his class and the No. 223 overall prospect in the 247 Composite Rankings. The Essexville, Mi native.
VanSumeren’s de-commitment came out of the blue and leaves Michigan with 5 players verbally committed in their 2022 class. Michigan’s top DT in ‘22 as of now is Davonte Miles, a 6-foot-5 three-star prospect from River Rouge, Michigan. The Michigan program has plenty of time to adjust and add quality options at DT in the 2022 class, but this will create a slight detour in their recruiting strategy. DT has become more of a point of emphasis since defensive coordinator Don Brown was fired in December, a trend that will surely continue with U-M now down a DT in the class of 22.
