How many DTs should Michigan take in the 2022 class?

The Wolverines are in need of bodies along the defensive line in 2022.

On this week’s Future Brew podcast, we discuss Michigan’s need for defensive tackles in the 2022 class, and what their chances with some of their top targets is looking like.

Von: Michigan is really in need of (defensive tackles) in this 2022 class. They already got one guy committed, in-state three-star Davonte Miles, but we don’t know if he’ll be an inside guy or a guy that comes off the edge in this new scheme. So to have a guy or two is really what they need in this class. Someone who can be a gap-plugger, because they don’t really have many of those guys on the roster right now. They’re gonna need a couple guys at the very least. A few of the defensive tackles they are in on — Walter Nolen, the five-star we’ve talked about him a ton. Domonique Orange is an interesting prospect from Kansas City, Peter Taoipu is listed at 6-foot-5 350, so he’s a true interior guy. And a few unranked guys. Jordan Phillips, 6-foot-3 290, and Hero Kanu, who will not be unranked for long after all these offers he’s getting, he’s 6-foot-5 293. So to get some of these other guys to take an official visit is that next step for the defensive coaching staff. All of these guys outside of Nolen are not locked in for an official visit to Michigan yet.

Jon: I can even throw in another unranked guy they offered is Kenneth Grant from Indiana. He’s listed at 335 and he’s just planet-sized, he’s huge. So I think that’s another guy Michigan is going after. I think a lot of these nose tackles, they’re ranking can be deflated because of their size and the way sites like 247 like to rank prospects. I think getting two defensive tackles would be good. They were able to pull Ike Iwuannah late in the last cycle, which will help bridge the gap there. But getting two of these guys is gonna be necessary. Two or three guys I think — maybe they’ll take a tweener with defensive end/defensive tackle type guy, too. We’ll have to see.
