Thursday Recruiting Roundup: New 2022 QB target emerging

Courtney Morgan is trying to work his magic on the West Coast for a new QB target.

For much of the 2022 recruiting cycle, quarterback has been a position Michigan has been struggling with. Many of the previous targets have either committed elsewhere or just have not shown much mutual interest in the program. It really appears to be three-star Nate Johnson or bust at this point. Or, at least until recently.

Morgan putting in work on four-star QB

According to The Michigan Insider’s Brice Marich ($), the Wolverines are now actively recruiting four-star quarterback Justyn Martin. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder from Inglewood, California has been committed to Cal since Jan. 18, but that isn’t stopping Courtney Morgan and company from going after him.

“Coach Morgan has talked to me recently just talking about the school,” Martin told Marich. “I like how he’s from this area and how he understands the transition from California to Michigan.”

The Wolverines have yet to offer Martin, but they did tell him they want to see him throw first before providing a scholarship. With that in mind, Martin is “in the process of putting together my schedule” and is hoping to visit Michigan.

Marich notes he “remains solid” with his commitment to Cal, but for being committed to another program, Martin appears to be pretty open with his recruiting process. This is in the early stages here, so stay tuned in the weeks and months to follow.

Martin is the No. 14 pro-style quarterback, No. 20 player from California and No. 269 overall prospect on 247Sports’ composite.

2023 Ohio OT locks in unofficial visit

We are going to venture to the 2023 for just a quick second, as this prospect will be one to remember for the next recruiting cycle.

According to TMI’s Marich ($), 2023 four-star offensive lineman Luke Montgomery is slated to unofficially visit Michigan June 10. The 6-foot-5, 260-pounder from Findlay, Ohio is primarily being recruited by Sherrone Moore. He has never been to Ann Arbor, so this will mark a big step in this recruitment for the Wolverines.

Luke’s father told Marich they spoke with Jim Harbaugh for the first time earlier this week, and the conversation went about as well as it could have.

“Jim was great,” Mr. Montgomery said. “We liked his sense of humor. It was our first conversation with him. He is excited to get us on campus in June. Jim seemed very personable and we appreciate his insights to the program. It went very positive.”

At the moment, there is one crystal ball in for the Buckeyes. Keep in mind this crystal ball was put in the day Montgomery landed his offer from Ohio State, and the OSU insider who placed that crystal ball is notorious for placing it the same day any kid from Ohio gets an offer from OSU. That said, the Buckeyes likely do lead at the moment, but Michigan is going to get a decent shot here.

Montgomery is the No. 5 offensive tackle, No. 3 player from Ohio and No. 53 overall player on the 247Sports composite.

Recently-offered ATH hopes to visit Ann Arbor

We will wrap up today’s roundup by returning to the class of 2022.

ICYMI, earlier this week I spoke with three-star athlete Jaren Kanak. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, he was offered on Monday by Jay Harbaugh. The Wolverines are recruiting him on defense.

“The conversation was great,” Kanak said. “Really enjoyed talking to him. Very cool guy.”

Kanak has two visits set up to Clemson on June 1 and Nebraska on June 6, but he is in the midst of planning out more trips. And from the sounds of it, Michigan could very well be on the list of potential destinations.

“Would like to visit (Michigan), yes,” Kanak said. “(I would look forward to) just getting a feel for the place, seeing everything in-person.”

Kanak is the No. 1 player in the state of Kansas, No. 41 athlete and No. 489 overall on the composite. There is one crystal ball in for Clemson, which could instantly become the favorite for his services if he lands an offer from the Tigers when he visits on June 1.

That is all for now! Come back Tuesday for another edition of the Recruiting Roundup.
