The first step to solving a problem is knowing what’s creating the problem in the first place. After Michigan’s 36-14 victory over Cincinnati, Wilton Speight addressed what he needs to improve upon. Speight made a handful of excellent throws, but also had some that were thrown too high or wide that didn’t give the receiver a fighting chance to catch the football. In all, Speight was 17-29 for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Speight’s comments:
“What it comes down to is when there’s something going on in my face I’ve got to avoid the pressure and whatnot, I’ve got to maintain my base. Coach Pep’s (Pep Hamilton) been big on keeping my base, staying loaded. And sometimes when I move around in the pocket I get a little sloppy with my footwork, my feet, which causes the ball to sail, or to go a little low. That’s something I’ve been working on everyday and will continue to do so.”
The good news for Speight is the season is still in its infancy, and there are games left on the schedule against teams Michigan should beat. In these games, in the practices preparing for them, Speight will have to make the strides he’s aware are necessary if Michigan is to compete for a National Championship.
Speight will look to get it rolling consistently when Michigan faces Air Force next Saturday at 12 ET.
