Identifying the standouts from the Wolverines’ victory on Saturday

Michigan earned victory number-five yesterday in a 14-7 win over Wisconsin. It was the first truly tightly-contested game from start to finish of the season and it showed that the Wolverines have the firepower on both sides of the ball to pull it out in big games.

Here are the game balls:

Offense: Wilton Speight

Speight is far from perfect as a passer and has no shortage of things he has to work on, but his ability to escape pressure and make big time throws continues to impress. He threw his second interception of the season and had some erratic throws, but made the game-winning toss when it counted on a ball that could not have been thrown any better. Speight has showed in two years he can win big games even when he is not playing great. That is a great omen moving forward.

Defense: Channing Stribling

Jourdan Lewis will get all the accolades for his ridiculous interception — and rightfully so — but Stribling is starting to make teams pay for picking on him. Once upon a time, he was a player that teams would target and complete long passes against. Now, he is starting to make them pay by coming up with plays of his own. He really has emerged as an excellent number-two corner behind Lewis.

Special Teams: Kenny Allen

Yes, he missed two field goals and has not been great as a kicker, but as a punter he has been excellent and his efforts yesterday played a huge role in the field position battle. The Wolverines have to figure out their field goal problem, but they by no means have a punting problem.

A good ‘ol fashioned brawl.

Michigan moved to 5-0 on the 2016 season with a 14-7 win over Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines outgained the Badgers 349-159 on the ground and on the stat sheet, the game should not have been as close as it was, but that’s why they play the games.

Here are a few quick takeaways:

A win is a win is a win...

That statement is true, but Michigan gave up a lot of opportunities to extend their lead and really put a stamp on this one. Kenny Allen missed a pair of field goals and Ryan Tice missed one of his own.

Wilton Speight threw his first interception since the first snap of the season and had a few errant throws throughout the day. Penalties also became an issue.

At the end of the day, people are going to be worried about what they saw, but this all occurred against one of the best teams in college football and the Wolverines got it done.

A road trip to Rutgers awaits and then there is a bye week before they come home to play Illinois. There is a lot of time to fix the fixable things and get better and what they already do.

Kicking game concerns

We touched on the kicking game above, and that is probably the biggest concern as we head into the meat of the Big Ten schedule. You simply cannot leave points on the field in games and expect to win. It worked out today, but that will not always be the case.

Jim Harbaugh said after the game that there will be a competition this week in practice to determine who will kick field goals moving forward. It will presumably be between Allen and Tice, as freshman kicker Quinn Nordin is “working through something.

Speight has the clutch gene

Speight may not be perfect. He may not be flashy. However, when the chips are down, he makes big throws.

We saw it last season in Minnesota and today against Wisconsin. He does not get rattled and that is a huge asset when the team needs a score late in a game. He will continue to frustrate some fans, but results do not lie.

He is 5-0 as a starting quarterback and has led his team to two wins this season when things were looking bleak. That means something.

Tip of the hat to the Badgers

Many fans and media — and many of us on staff here — saw this as a game where Wisconsin would be exposed, especially without their star linebacker Vince Biegel. They did an excellent job of keeping the Wolverines in check.

Some people will say both teams that took the field today are overrated, but we will see what the Badgers do when they take on the Buckeyes next.

Michigan cornerback Channing Stribling recorded more than one interception for the first time since high school in U-M’s win.

After Michigan’s 14-7 win over Wisconsin, Channing Stribling spoke about the win, his play and the dominance of Jourdan Lewis.

The cornerback logged two tackles, one tackle for a loss, two pass breakups and two interceptions. Stribling’s confidence is at an all-time high.

Back to my freshman year,” Stribling said. “I had the same kind of confidence and the coaches have the same kind of confidence in you, then the sky’s the limit.”

Stribling believes that since Jourdan Lewis has been so dominant over his college career, teams will continually throw the other way. Wisconsin tested Stribling on Saturday, and it did not work out in the Badgers favor.

Lewis is an All-American, you got to go away,” he said. “It’s good either way. It is more chances I have to make plays. They had to throw to somebody. I just had to do my best.”

As a matter of fact, Lewis made four tackles, four solo tackles, one pass breakup and an interception.

As the offense struggled for Michigan, the defense stepped up to help secure a 14-7 win against Wisconsin.

The No. 4 Michigan Wolverines welcomed a tough test to The Big House in the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers. The superb defense led the Wolverines to a 14-7 victory, which marks Michigan’s first win over a Top 10 opponent since 2008.

Michigan jumped on the board first as Khalid Hill pounded the ball into the end zone. The one-yard touchdown with 14:56 left in the first quarter gave the Wolverines a 7-0 lead.

The run game for Michigan was led by De’Veon Smith early in the contest. He ran 17 times for 66 yards, while Ty Isaac took over late with eight carries for 48 yards. True freshman Chris Evans chipped in 43 yards of total offense for the Wolverines.

Kenny Allen, with 9:47 left in the second quarter, missed a field goal from 31 yards out. Believe it or not, Allen missed his second field goal of the game four minutes later and the score remained 7-0. The 43-yard miss was Allen’s fourth missed field goal this season.

The Badgers finally got past the Michigan defense with 8:03 left in the third quarter to tie the game, 7-7. Alex Hornibrook found Dare Ogunbowale streaking in the end zone for the touchdown. The score was set up by Derrick Tindal’s interception, as he took the ball for 46 yards after swiping the ball away.

Even though he did not score a touchdown, the most influential player on the offense end was Corey Clement. The Badgers running back took off 17 times for 68 yards.

Just when it could not get any worse, backup kicker Ryan Trice missed a 40-yard field goal with 2:25 left in the third quarter. The score remained knotted between Michigan and Wisconsin.

Wilton Speight brought his offense to the field and finally made something happen with 7:56 left in the game. Speight threw a 46-yard completion to Amara Darboh in the end zone to give Michigan a 14-7 lead over Wisconsin.

While Speight struggled at times, he ended the game 20-for-32 for 219 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He found Darboh six times for 87 yards and a touchdown. Jehu Chesson, Jake Butt and Grant Perry were other big receivers for Michigan.

As Wisconsin was attempting to drive down the field, Channing Stribling made his second interception of the game. With 2:15 left, Jourdan Lewis made a ridiculous interception to earn Michigan the ball back on offense.

Hornibrook finished the game 9-for-25 through the air for 88 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. His top receiver was Robert Wheelwright, who picked up 46 yards on three catches. Believe it or not, Wisconsin only managed 159 yards of offense against the stellar Michigan defense.

Ultimately, the interception allowed the Wolverines to secure a 14-7 win.

This is your one-stop guide to who you should be pulling for in the Big Ten and across college football this week.

Michigan football has an extremely tough matchup with Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon, but they should still be able to pull out a victory.

We do a lot of scoreboard watching here at Maize n Brew, as I’m sure the readers at home do as well. Despite not being loyal to other schools, we still find ourselves rooting for other teams during the weekend.

If you’re a Michigan fan, here is your rooting interest guide for this weekend with Big Ten and College Football Playoff implications on the line:

Big Ten slate

Northwestern (1-3, 0-1) at Iowa (3-1, 1-0), 12 p.m. ET - ESPNU

Root for: Northwestern

Games featuring the Big Ten West can be kind of a coin flip for Michigan fans in terms of who they root for. Pat Fitzgerald’s team has struggled this year and is a friend of the program, so we’ll pull for the Wildcats getting themselves back on track.

Rutgers (2-2, 0-1) at #2 Ohio State (3-0), 12 p.m. ET - Big Ten Network

Root for: Rutgers

Michigan fans will root for OSU to lose every game. That is just the way it is. Rutgers has absolutely no shot in this game and will be caught looking ahead to next week’s big rivalry game* with the Wolverines.

*= riiight

Purdue (2-1) at Maryland (3-0), 3:30 p.m. ET - Big Ten Network

Root for: Purdue

We want nothing but the best for D.J. Durkin during his rebuilding job at Maryland, and they will likely win this game, but Purdue could use a win to perhaps make Darrell Hazell’s seat a little less hot.

Minnesota (3-0) at Penn State (2-2, 0-1), 3:30 p.m. ET - Big Ten Network

Root for: Minnesota

Penn State was a disaster last week in Ann Arbor and they do not look like much of a factor in the Big Ten East. A Gophers victory could put the Nittany Lions in an 0-2 hole with games against MSU and OSU still ahead.

Illinois (1-2) at #15 Nebraska (4-0, 1-0), 3:30 p.m. ET - ESPN2

Root for: Nebraska

Nebraska was my pick to win the West this year and I like looking smart (even though I’m not). The West division has been kind of bland the last few seasons, but Nebraska and Wisconsin are two legitimate teams that could make the Big Ten title game interesting if they get there.

#8 Wisconsin (4-0, 1-0) at #4 Michigan (4-0, 1-0), 3:30 p.m. ET - ABC

Root for: Michigan (duh)

Not much of an explanation is needed here on this website. If Michigan wins big, they will have announced themselves as a legitimate conference title and playoff hopeful.

#17 Michigan State (2-1, 0-1) at Indiana (2-1), 8 p.m. ET - BTN

Root for: Indiana

MSU is in the OSU category of “hope they get swallowed by a sinkhole at midfield” among fans, but this is an interesting one. On one hand, another MSU loss makes them less of a threat to win the East, but it also could take away some cache from the matchup with Michigan on Oct. 29. In the here and now, pull for the Chaos Team.

Out of conference games

#7 Stanford (3-0, 2-0) at #10 Washington (4-0, 1-0), 9 p.m. ET (Friday night) - ESPN

Root for: Washington

Chris Peterson has done a great job in turning around Washington and they have a chance to make a big statement in week five. Different is always good!

#11 Tennessee (4-0, 1-0) at #25 Georgia (3-1, 1-1), 3:30 p.m. ET - CBS

Root for: Georgia

An undefeated SEC team is a recipe for some silliness when it comes to the polls. A loss for Fightin’ DeBords takes another program out of striking distance of the top ten and out of the playoff conversation for now.

#3 Louisville (4-0, 2-0) at #5 Clemson (4-0, 1-0), 8 p.m. ET - ABC

Root for: Clemson

This is kind of a coin flip. A Louisville loss opens the door for Michigan to get into the top three, but Clemson could also just flip spots and move into that slot. We’ll go with the Tigers seeing as it’s the best chance for the Wolverines to climb up the polls.
